Holding Back the Tide

Water/wave

The tide happens.

We don’t control it.

We can’t organize contain restrain change rearrange it.

It sweeps away what isn’t deeply rooted

washes away footprints

of those who walked the beach

and

tugs and draws with enough force

to take a life.

The tide brings in with it

objects from afar,

some of them so

water-worn polished that

they are unrecognizable.

We can’t control

or hold

or hold back

the tide.
